The flag of New South Wales was officially adopted by the government in 1876, out of the British Admiralty’s concerns that the previous flag was too alike to the Victorian state flag, a rivalry still present today.
The flag consists of a defaced British Blue Ensign with the state badge in the fly, The badge, based on the NSW coat of arms, features the Cross of St George on a white disk in the fly. It was designed by Captain Francis Hickson, a retired Royal Navy officer and the colonial architect James Barnet. No meaning for the design was given but it is speculated to be a simplified version of the semi-official arms of NSW at the time.
