New Zealand’s national flag emerged gradually, and settled in 1902 as what you see today.

Stemming from the British naval and maritime ensign, with a Union Jack in the upper left corner and a seal or badge for your area in the fly, the NZ government had difficulty at first as they had no recognised badge. Governor Grey designed a national badge that was very unpopular before the country settled on the Southern Cross with four red stars with white edges. Used increasingly on land, this maritime flag with a Blue ensign became recognised as the New Zealand Ensign or flag as it is now called.
